History and Activities

Arch (North East) offers confidential advice and counselling to anyone over the age of 14 who has experienced sexual abuse, exploitation or rape. The charity provides a safe, non-judgemental and comfortable environment to help victims of sexual crimes find ways of taking back control of their lives. The charity is based in Teesside, but they deliver their services across the region.

Arch will assign an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA) to anyone 14 years and over who resides in the Teesside area and needs support. An advisor’s role is to help give a voice to those who have experienced abuse or exploitation no matter how much time has passed. This can be through providing a safe space and counselling or if the individual chooses, support in reporting a sex crime. Advisors provide support throughout a criminal investigation process; before, during and after a trial, and will work with multiple agencies on behalf of their clients. In 2017, Arch North East provided 5,761 support sessions.

The charity also runs the ArchWay Project which helps sex workers over 18 who have experienced rape or sexual assault. A ‘No Judgement’ approach helps survivors of assault receive the support they want; whether it is someone to talk to or guidance about the Criminal Justice process. Furthermore, Arch can provide services to supporters of victims of sexual abuse who can often be family members and close friends.

The charity’s Life Enhancement Skills Advisors (LESA) offer practical support to individuals who have experienced sexual abuse. LESA focus on everyday issues that can often be difficult to cope with after experiencing sexual violence including; overcoming addiction, housing, financial issues, welfare and benefits, employment and improving qualifications.

Arch (North East) is supported by a team of dedicated volunteers who help raise funds, run campaigns and promotions, and provide administration to vital projects.

In 2017 Arch North East received £463,792 from public and private grants including; £98,555 from the Big Lottery Fund, £84,000 from the Ministry of Justice Rape Support Fund, £40,600 from The Henry Smith Charity, £56,000 from Middlesbrough Public Health, £53,570 from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and £39,921 from IICSA Truth Project.
