History and Activities

Established in 1993, Dementia Care provides specialist care, support and advice to people with dementia and other neurological disorders, such as acquired brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

The crisis in social care has attracted a great deal of media coverage in rent years. There have been a number of private sector care providers withdrawing from public sector contracts, citing the lack of return for operating in these sectors. Local authorities in the North East are in the bottom quartile in terms of overall spending per capita, which places increased pressure on charities such as Dementia Care.

In 2016/7 the charity supported almost 400 people with dementia in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. They did this in a number of ways. The charity operates two dementia specialist day centre in Newcastle and Hexham which combined offer services to around 50 people per day. In addition, they operate a respite centre in Newcastle which offers support, regardless of ability to pay, to over 60 people. However, the overwhelming majority of people are supported in their own home through the day services they offer. The charity firmly believes that people’s needs are best served, if at all possible, from their own home.

Philanthropy forms a small, but vitally important competent of Dementia Cares’ income. In 2016.17 they received £64,753 in cash donations and a further £ 264,283 from grant income. Of the latter, the largest proportion is associated with Northumberland Dementia Project. The Ballinger Charitable Trust is an ongoing supporter of the charities endeavours.
