History and Activities

Edberts House is a community project based in the High Lanes Estate in Gateshead. In 2010, the estate had the unflattering distinction of having the highest level of antisocial behaviour in Gateshead. After nine years in operation, the charity can justifiably lay claim to having helped solve what had become a deep-seated problem.

The charity operates two community hubs. The first is the original home on High Lanes Estate, which since 2009 has been the base for a wide range of community activities. This year the Virgin Money Foundation provided the funds needed to refurbish the building and cover the salary of a full-time community worker for 3 years. The team at Edberts house plan and deliver activities of different kinds for all sections of the community, but with a particular emphasis on young people. Adults out of work are helped to gain accredited qualifications and young people benefit from organized activities and trips. The second centre is Pattinson House on Old Fold and Nest Estates. This centre is funded by People's Health Trust under its Local Conversations Programme. The purpose of the programme is to address the prevalence of poor health in the area. Sport, healthy eating, education and craft activities are on offer. There were 8,820 attendances at Edberts House in 2016/17 and a further 3,449 at Pattinson House, totalling 12,269. One of the charity’s most innovative projects is Community Linking. It estimates that by offering patients of four GP practices community-based support, it has saved 588 GP appointments in 2016/17.

The greater part of the charity’s income is from grants made by charitable trusts and foundations, including the Virgin Money Foundation, the People’s Health Trust and the Tudor Trust.
