History and Activities

Hospitality and Hope is a Christian faith-based charity who support need individuals and families in crisis in South Tyneside. To achieve this they operate a South Tyneside Foodbank and a kitchen.

The original service offered by the charity was a soup kitchen, which has 90 needy people registered for whom it provides around 60, two-course meals per week, to homeless and vulnerable people. However, increasing demand for foodbanks has meant an increasing focus on providing food parcels. In the last year, their team of 60 volunteers delivered £23,600 worth of food to 2,777 people.

The charity own and operate a supported living project, based on a Christian ethos, which allows 5 men who have often been homeless, the opportunity to live independently and reintegrate back into the local community. Alongside this, the charity runs a community cafe which is just opposite Chichester Metro in South Shields. Opened in 2017, it has provided much-needed work for the residents of the supported living project, offering a way back into work and society more generally.

In the last year, the charity has incurred a great deal of capital expenditure as a result of the acquisition and subsequent refurbishment of the Laygate premises which houses the café and supported living project. In 2017 they received generous grants from the Barbour Foundation [£50,000] and the Ballinger Foundation [£50,000] in order to purchase the building. Of particular note, their Patron Sir David Chapman, gave £20,500 to support the purchase, then a year later, an additional £20,150 to aid the refurbishment effort. Other benefactors who have supported the refurbishment have included Banks Community Fund [£20,000], The Albert Hunt Trust [£15,000] and The Vardy Foundation [£10,000]. The vast proportion of the charity’s income is derived from grants [£202,007].
