History and Activities

Kids Kabin brings creative opportunities to disadvantaged children living in some of the most deprived parts of Newcastle – Walker, Cowgate, Pottery Bank, Daisy Hill and Byker – that rank in the top 10% most deprived areas of the city. Children aged between eight and 13 attend to learn, relax and have fun. In 2016/7 there were 4,522 individual attendances at sessions delivered by a staff team of seven, several of whom work part-time, and numerous volunteers.

The charity was founded in 1994 when a group of nuns began running arts and crafts activities at a disused shop in a local shopping centre in Walker. It now operates from a purpose-built arts centre, which has workshops for various activities like art, woodwork, bike repairing, cookery, dance, drama, pottery and other crafts. Camping and cycling trips in the wilds of Northumberland add another dimension to the provision. As activities have found increasing favour with children and parents, satellite centres have been opened in Byker, Cowgate, Daisy Hill and Pottery Bank.

What impresses most about the charity is the amount of good done relative to the cash expended. It works because it expands the horizons of the children it serves, teaching craft skills, encouraging teamwork and imparting a stronger sense of community. It is financially efficient because of the contribution freely made by volunteers. Kids Kabin is loyally supported by charitable trusts and foundations like the Sir James Knott Trust, the Esmee Fairburn Foundation and Children in Need. The Wellesley Trust Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland is also a regular donor.
