History and Activities

Newcastle United Foundation is the charitable arm of Newcastle United Football Club. It delivers programmes which are split across four core areas; learning & skills, football, health & wellbeing and community.

The Foundation champions the idea that sport is a powerful instrument of social change. Playing sport not only improves the physical health of the population, but it can also improve mental health, create friendships and improve community interaction. In total 58,348 people took part in programmes which the foundation organised in 2017-19, which was an increase of 8% on the year previous. The Foundation delivers a wide variety of programmes, all of which are congruous with its broad aim of using football to make a difference. For example, in 2017-18 the foundation delivered Primary Stars to 6,758 schools. They engaged with 1,883 young people in their Premier League Kicks project, which offers free football in local communities every week and where over 25% of participants are BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic). A smaller, but no less important programme, saw 142 older players taking part in Walking Football.

The foundation has proposed an ambitious plan to redevelop Murray House Community Centre, close to St James’ Park stadium. The major new development will become the new home of the foundation as well as a hub for sports education and wellbeing, with football at its heart. It is also hoped that the redevelopment will better serve the community in Newcastle’s West End, which is one of the poorest communities in the city.

Newcastle United Foundation’s income was £2,711,266 at the end of 2016/17, an increase of over 30% compared to the previous year. The growth was in part because of increased levels of funding from the Premier League, funds allocated by Newcastle United Football Club from broadcasting deals. The charity’s other income comes from grants it receives to deliver programmes (£927,565), fees derived from football and education programmes (£237,599) and contractual income from local authorities for the delivery of health, wellbeing and community work (£282,152).
