History and Activities

Scotswood is a working-class community in the west end of Newcastle upon Tyne. Over recent decades, as a result of the decline of heavy industry, the area has suffered badly from unemployment, poverty and anti-social behaviour. Scotswood had become so run down that large parts of it were demolished by the authorities in the late 1990s and 2000s. It is presently undergoing a resurgence with the building of new homes and local facilities.

The Scotswood Centre was founded in 1994 with the aim of improving the lives of local people. Its stated mission is to “collaborate with others to provide services and facilities for the benefit of local residents to inform, educate and improve lives”. It seeks to do this by:

  • Organizing activity groups for young people to develop communication, social skills and confidence.
  • Providing a ‘Men’s Shed’ facility for economically inactive men to share skills and work together on shed based projects.
  • Running a Community Time Bank to encourage individuals to learn skills and participate in community activities; trading skills and attending fun sessions for free as a reward for volunteering or attending training sessions.
  • Provision of essential facilities, including a community café, Post Office, convenience store and a Community Cinema run as social enterprises by local people.
  • Supporting community events, involving up to 500 residents, like fun days and parties.

In 2016/17, the charity worked with over 600 individuals with 2,749 attendances recorded. Regular sessions were attended by 228 individuals. The charity is largely funded by grants from charitable trusts and foundations.
