History and Activities
Tees Valley Arts (TVA) is a participatory arts organisation based in Middlesbrough. The charity was founded as ‘Cleveland Arts’ in 1982 to promote, maintain and encourage education of the public in the range of arts activities throughout Cleveland County. At which time the charity supported all acts activities including drama, opera, ballet, photography, films and literature. Essentially, the mission was to support any and all art projects. Today, TVA continues to passionately champion creative activities as a tool for improving the quality of life for individuals, communities and the region.

To encourage participation in the arts, TVA works in partnership with a broad range of organisations to deliver projects with positive social outcomes. TVA does this in a number of ways, for example; it designs and delivers CPD to schools to help them develop richer art curriculums. Other projects included delivering the creative sessions to men in Kirklevington Grange and Holme House Prisons through the Making Time project (which secured £39,142 from the Ministry of Justice) and TVA was involved in a collaborative Tees Valley application to the Arts Council and Heritage Lottery Fund for ‘Great Places’. Great Places is an ambitious project with £1.5 million to host participatory arts and heritage evens for local communities.

The charity is supported by grant income which totalled £175,446 in 2017. A major donor in both 2016 and 2017 was the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation who provided unrestricted funding. This is much-needed funding that gives charities the freedom to cover core costs and develop projects. TVA also received specific funding for projects from the Arts Council (£24,000) and River Tees Rediscovered (£27,010).
