History and Activities

Tynedale Hospice at Home offers a range of services broadly aimed at relieving the distress of people with life-limiting illnesses. The hospice employs 19 nurses and carers who in 2016-7 delivered 5,456 hours of nursing care to 109 patients. The charity is supported by 240 dedicated volunteers who help the hospice achieve its vision. This vision is simple but profound; that every family experiencing a life-limiting illness or sudden death, should have the support of their community.

Volunteers tend to fulfil two main roles within the charity. Firstly, they provide a hospital transport service, in their own vehicles, so that patients can attend treatments at the hospital. A total of 644 journeys were provided by volunteer drivers in the region, who covered a combined total of 40,652 miles. Secondly; volunteers help run three retail premises which raise funds for the hospice. Two of these premises are in Hexham and one is situated in Ponteland. The shops are run by volunteers who last year provided over 17,316 hours of work.

In 2017, the total philanthropic income of Tynedale Hospice was £364,989. This was largely composed of grant income. £107,621 of this was received through a single grant from the Big Lottery Fund. Income from donations increased by 32.1% from 2016, the equivalent of £47,817.
