History and Activities

The JGW Patterson Foundation funds medical research into cancer, rheumatology and arthritis. Its aim is to support clinical and laboratory research in the North East to acquire a more detailed understanding of life-changing diseases, improve treatment and promote best practice. The capital and income of the foundation derive from the estate of John George William Patterson (1944-2005). Patterson was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and educated at the Royal Grammar School Newcastle. He made his fortune in property investment, building up a sizeable portfolio of residential properties in Newcastle. He later added a series of commercial properties to his already extensive portfolio. John didn’t have children and never married. He enjoyed collecting fine wine and driving sports cars. He was always, however, a generous man, ready to write a cheque to help a needy cause. Philanthropy ran in his family. His aunt Marjorie Robinson left £8 million to Newcastle University when she died in 1998. The main University Library is named in honour of her husband Phillip, a Newcastle bookseller, who died in 1989.

John Patterson established the foundation in 2002. In 2017, it paid out £1,035,699 in grants, 61% to support cancer research and 32% for research into rheumatology and arthritis. Newcastle University has been the main beneficiary in recent years, receiving £1,069,932 in 2016 and £940,544 in 2017. The foundation has three sources of income: rents, dividends and interest receivable, amounting to a £1,072,641 in 2016/17, of which £883,165 came from the property portfolio John bequeathed.

The foundation funds PhD students to encourage the best young graduates to develop a career in research. Two arthritis studentships and two cancer studentships are offered in memory of Andrew Walker and Peter May, late partners of the law firm Sintons LLP, which serves as solicitor to the JGW Patterson Foundation.
